Hydrogen train

Hydrogen train: A hydrogen train is a railway vehicle that uses hydrogen fuel cells instead of conventional fuel to generate power. Unlike traditional trains, this trains produce zero emissions—only water vapor as a by-product. Many countries, including India, are actively developing and testing this new model of eco-friendly trains.

Where Is It Starting in India and When Will It Launch?

As per the report India’s first hydrogen train is starting from the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. Some early reports have said that it will start from March 2025 but the work is still going on to stretch this train 89 km from Haryana after some trials and testing. After the start of this train there will also be some other routes under the “Hydrogen for Heritage” plan. Apart from this the train will also have a 1200 HP engine which is expected to deploy on Heritage roots like the Kalka-Shimla line.

How Does the Hydrogen Train Work?

This train work in the following ways:

It has storage of hydrogen gas in High pressure tank usually located on the roof of the train. These hydrogen are fitted into the fuel cells to create electric current. The electricity generated by the fuel cell helps the train to transition electricity in the motor which helps the wheels and propel to work forward for the train. Most of the hydrogen trains are hybrid vehicles which have incorporated batteries that have several crucial functions while the train is working. These batteries help for storage of electricity, Braking regeneration, and boost the train an immersion of hydrogen fuel into water vapor.

The Benefits of this Trains.

Here are some key advantages of this trains:

  • Zero Emissions: They produce only water vapor and heat, making them environmentally friendly.

  • Low Noise Pollution: Hydrogen trains are much quieter than traditional diesel locomotives.

  • Ideal for Non-Electrified Lines: They can run on tracks without electrification, reducing infrastructure costs.

  • Long Range & Efficiency: Capable of traveling long distances and operating for extended hours.

Why Was the Hydrogen Train in India Delayed?

The delay is due to technical issues encountered during testing and the need to increase the capacity of the fuel cells. Additional time is also required for modifications and safety checks. Initially planned for launch in December 2024, it was postponed to March 2025. However, recent updates suggest the train could be launched by the end of 2025.
