Around 624 CE, Allah commanded fasting during Ramadan through the Quran: “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” The practice of fasting was inspired by earlier religious traditions, as Jews, Christians, and other faiths also practiced fasting as a form of devotion.

Initially, there were fewer restrictions; Muslims could eat and drink at any time until they slept at night. Later, fasting was set from dawn to sunset. In addition, special prayers like Taraweeh and Zakat (charity) became essential parts of Ramadan observance. Over the centuries, Ramadan has evolved into a spiritual, cultural, and social event observed by millions worldwide.
