The history of Ramadan.
Ramadan has been observed by Muslims for over 1,400 years and is deeply rooted in Islamic history and spirituality. It is during this time that the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad. The observance of Ramadan began in 610 CE when Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) in the Cave of Hira near Mecca. This night is known as Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Power) and is considered the holiest night of the year. Over time, more revelations followed, and fasting during Ramadan became an obligation in 624 CE after the migration of Muslims from Mecca to Medina.

Around 624 CE, Allah commanded fasting during Ramadan through the Quran: “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” The practice of fasting was inspired by earlier religious traditions, as Jews, Christians, and other faiths also practiced fasting as a form of devotion.
Initially, there were fewer restrictions; Muslims could eat and drink at any time until they slept at night. Later, fasting was set from dawn to sunset. In addition, special prayers like Taraweeh and Zakat (charity) became essential parts of Ramadan observance. Over the centuries, Ramadan has evolved into a spiritual, cultural, and social event observed by millions worldwide.

Today, Ramadan is observed in every Muslim-majority country and by Muslim communities worldwide. It is a time of self-discipline, spiritual reflection, and communal unity. These traditions are shared across cultures, and many non-Muslims also participate in fasting or Iftar gatherings as a sign of solidarity.
