Why was it named this and who named it?

It was named after Mirza Najaf Khan, a Persian nobleman and a powerful military commander in the Mughal Empire during the late 18th century. Mirza Najaf Khan served as the Mir Bakshi (Commander-in-Chief) of the Mughal army under Emperor Shah Alam II. He strengthens Delhi defenses, as he established a fortified military settlement in this area. After this settlement was later named “Najafgarh,” which means “Fort of Najaf” (with “Garh” meaning fort in Hindi).

It is believed that the Mughal administration and local people started referring to this place as Najafgarh after Mirza Najaf Khan established a fortified military settlement there in the late 18th century. Even after his death in 1782, the name continued to be used, preserving his legacy as a key military leader who played a role in defending Delhi.

When and why did the renaming of the place be proposed?

On February 27 20 25 April proposal was made by BJP MLA of this place , Neelam Pahalwan saying that the place should we renamed into Najafgarh. This proposal was made to honour Raja Nahar Singh’s in 1857 revolt and his efforts to bring the region under Delhi’s territory.

She said “During the 1857 revolt, Raja Nahar Singh fought and included Najafgarh in Delhi’s territory. Despite several efforts, including those by then MP Parvesh Verma, we tried to rename Najafgarh to ‘Najafgarh’,”.

The Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said BJP showing their true Colors within 6 days of forming of their government, instead of delivering on its promises that they made during the election.

He also said “People elected the BJP to power expecting good governance, to solve the many problems afflicting the Capital and its residents, but it is proving to be no better than the corrupt and inefficient Kejriwal government,”.
