Kranti Gaud Becomes the First Bowler Ever to Take a Five-Wicket Haul in Tests at Lord’s in Women’s Cricket

Kranti Gaud : In the annals of women’s cricket, few moments capture the magic of the sport like a debutant’s dream spell at the Home of Cricket. On July 11, 2026, Kranti Gaud etched her name into history by becoming the first bowler ever to take a five-wicket haul in a women’s Test match at Lord’s. Her maiden Test five-for (5/37) not only dismantled England but also secured her place on the iconic Lord’s Honours Board in the first-ever women’s Test at the venue.

This achievement is more than just statistics—it’s a testament to resilience, raw talent, and an inspiring journey from the dusty fields of rural Madhya Pradesh to the grand stage of international cricket. In this blog, we dive deep into Kranti Gaud’s background, her rise through the ranks, and the significance of her Lord’s heroics.

Early Life: Humble Beginnings in Ghuwara

Born on August 11, 2003, in Ghuwara panchayat in Chhatarpur district, Madhya Pradesh, Kranti Gaud (full name Kranti Munna Gaud) hails from a modest tribal family. The youngest of six siblings, she grew up in a two-room police quarters along the Sagar-Tikamgarh road. Her father, Munna Singh Gaud, a former police constable, faced dismissal from service in 2012, plunging the family into financial hardship. Her eldest brother had to drop out of studies to support the household.

Like many young talents in rural India, Kranti’s introduction to cricket was unconventional. She initially played tennis-ball cricket with boys in her village, often as a backup player. Her big break came around age 15 during a local leather-ball match when her team was short a player. She scored 25 runs and took two wickets, earning Player of the Match. This performance caught the eye of coach Rajiv Bilthare (or Bilthre) from Chhatarpur, who became her mentor.

Despite limited resources—no proper pitches or widespread support for girls’ cricket in the area—Kranti’s determination shone through. She moved to Chhatarpur for training, with the academy often covering her food, lodging, and gear. Coaches emphasized one simple mantra: “Run fast and bowl quick.” This foundation shaped her skiddy, inswing-friendly medium-fast bowling style.

Domestic Rise and Breakthrough Moments

Kranti’s progression through age-group cricket was rapid. She captained district and divisional teams and played a key role in Sagar Division’s success in the 2018-19 Under-16 tournament. Her domestic career peaked in the 2024–25 Senior Women’s One Day Trophy, where she took 17 wickets, including a match-winning 4/25 in the final that helped Madhya Pradesh clinch their maiden title.

This form earned her a spot with UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) for ₹10 lakh in the 2024 auction. She made an immediate impact, becoming the second-youngest player to claim a four-wicket haul in the league and dismissing stars like Meg Lanning. Her ability to swing the ball both ways and bowl wicket-to-wicket stood out.

International Career: From ODI Debut to World Cup Glory

Kranti’s international journey accelerated in 2025. She made her ODI debut on May 11, 2025, against Sri Lanka and quickly announced herself with a sensational 6/52 against England at Chester-le-Street—the best figures by an Indian woman in ODIs at the time. At just 21 years and 345 days, she became the youngest Indian to take an ODI five-wicket haul, surpassing legends like Jhulan Goswami.

She was part of India’s triumphant 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup squad, contributing key wickets en route to the title. Her consistency in white-ball cricket earned her a Test cap (No. 96) against Australia in March 2026. By the time of the Lord’s Test, she had already proven her mettle across formats.

The Historic Day at Lord’s: Breaking Barriers

The one-off Women’s Test between India and England at Lord’s marked a milestone for the format. India posted 285 in their first innings, with strong contributions from batters like Smriti Mandhana. England resumed Day 2 at 21/1 and were cruising briefly before Kranti’s spell turned the game.

Bowling wicket-to-wicket with movement, she triggered a collapse. Key dismissals included England captain Heather Knight with a beautiful inswinger. England folded for just 170, handing India a commanding 115-run lead. Kranti finished with 5/37, earning a standing ovation and becoming the first woman on the Lord’s Test Honours Board.

Post-match, she humbly said she felt she could do even better. Both of her international five-wicket hauls have now come against England, highlighting her prowess against strong opposition.

Kranti Gaud : Why This Achievement Matters

Lord’s is synonymous with cricket excellence. While men’s Tests have seen nearly 200 five-wicket hauls since 1884, women’s cricket at the venue was limited until this historic Test. Kranti Gaud’s feat opens doors for future generations, proving that talent from small towns can conquer the biggest stages.
