Ed Sheeran, the acclaimed British singer-songwriter, has been making significant headlines recently, particularly with his activities in India and announcements concerning his music career.
Surprise Street Performance in Bengaluru
On February 9, 2025, Ed Sheeran surprised fans with an impromptu street performance on Church Street in Bengaluru, India. As he performed his hit “Shape of You,” local police intervened, citing the lack of a permit and concerns over crowd congestion. An officer disconnected his microphone, bringing the performance to an abrupt end. Sheeran later clarified on Instagram that he had obtained permission for the performance, stating, “We had permission to busk btw, hence us playing in that exact spot. (It) was planned out before, it wasn’t just us randomly turning up.” Despite the interruption, Sheeran continued with his scheduled concerts in India as part of his Mathematics Tour.
Mathematics Tour in India
Sheeran’s Mathematics Tour has seen him perform in multiple Indian cities, including Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru. The tour is set to conclude with performances in Shillong on February 12 and New Delhi on February 15. His concerts have been met with enthusiasm, drawing large crowds and significant media attention.
Upcoming Album Announcement
In December 2024, Ed Sheeran announced plans to release a new album in 2025, marking a return to his pop roots. He described the project as a “return to big pop,” reminiscent of his earlier hits like “Shape Of You” and “I Don’t Care.” Sheeran expressed excitement about creating music that encourages people to “enjoy, dance, and sing out loud.” The album is reportedly complete, with music videos already filmed, and is anticipated to be released early this year.
Establishment of the Ed Sheeran Foundation
In January 2025, Sheeran launched the Ed Sheeran Foundation, aiming to provide high-quality music education to children across the UK. Reflecting on his own experiences, Sheeran emphasized the importance of music in his early life and its role in shaping his career. The foundation has already supported 18 grassroots music education organizations, benefiting approximately 12,000 children by improving access to instruments and lessons. Sheeran has been actively promoting the initiative, visiting schools and youth groups in cities like Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh, and Belfast.
Memorable Moments in Mumbai
During his Mumbai concert in March 2024, Sheeran delighted fans by performing alongside Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh. The duo sang Dosanjh’s hit “Lover,” with Sheeran impressively singing in Punjabi for the first time. This unexpected collaboration was widely celebrated on social media, with fans praising the cross-cultural exchange.
