PM Modi: India’s push to bring back economic fugitives Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi has gained momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue during his meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the G20 Summit in Brazil on November 19, 2024. PM Modi emphasized the need for cooperation in expediting extradition processes and addressing migration-related issues.

 

Strengthening India-UK Strategic Partnership

This was the first meeting between PM Modi and PM Starmer, during which both leaders discussed deepening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Key areas of focus included:

  • Economy and Trade: Enhancing bilateral trade agreements.
  • Emerging Technologies: Collaborating on cutting-edge innovation.
  • Green Economy: Supporting sustainable economic growth.

Both leaders emphasized faster migration procedures and mutual efforts to combat global challenges like corruption and economic offenses.

 

The Cases of Nirav Modi and Vijay Mallya

  • Nirav Modi:
    An Indian businessman involved in a $2 billion fraud at Punjab National Bank. He faces charges of money laundering, fraud, and embezzlement. In 2018, Nirav fled to the UK and sought political asylum. Swiss authorities have also frozen his assets worth $6 million.
  • Vijay Mallya:
    Known for the collapse of Kingfisher Airlines, Mallya has been declared a “willful defaulter” under Indian law. In 2017, he was convicted for contempt of court and ordered to repay millions with interest. Despite his legal appeals, India has been pursuing his extradition for years.

UK’s Response

PM Modi’s emphasis on extradition has renewed hope for action against these fugitives. PM Starmer assured stronger collaboration on pending legal cases, reinforcing ties between the two nations.
