The incident took place on a wooden ship, Kapal Layer Motor Fajar Lorena, which was traveling from a port in Sumenep Regency to Situbondo. The incident occurred at 1:10 PM local time.

Muhammad Hariyadi, Head of the East Java Search and Rescue Office, stated that there were a total of 51 people on board at the time of the incident. After the sinking, a rescue team of approximately 50 members immediately began their operation, successfully rescuing 49 people. However, one person was confirmed dead, and another remains missing.

Search and Rescue Operation

The rescue operation involved local authorities and maritime rescue teams, who worked tirelessly to locate survivors and those trapped in debris in the sea. The search for the missing person is still ongoing, and efforts to recover the body of the deceased are continuing.

Impact of Poor Weather Conditions

According to the rescue teams, the accident was caused by severe weather conditions. Strong waves and heavy rainfall made maritime travel hazardous. Muhammad Hariyadi mentioned, “The waves were very large, and the weather conditions were poor at that time.”

Prior to the incident, the Indonesia Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency had issued a warning for maritime travel, forecasting large waves and heavy rainfall. Officials had warned that these weather conditions could pose a risk to ships in the area.
