Lesbian couple gets engaged in Nagpur, Have marriage plans in Goa
Although homosexuality has been legalized in India under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, same-sex marriage is still seen as taboo in the country. But as there’s a saying, “love knows no bounds” – time and again this has been proved and the current incident is one among the most instances.
Two women doctors namely Surbhi Mitra and Paromita Mukherjee celebrated their relationship with their loved ones. The same-sex couple got engaged in a private ceremony in Maharashtra’s Nagpur, calling the event a “commitment ring ceremony.” The pictures of the gala event went viral on social media within moments of its share. The couple will be having their wedding ceremony which they named “Civil Union” in Goa, later this year.
Surbhi and Paromita first met each other at a mental health conference in Kolkata. Surbhi was one of the speakers at the conference which Parommita attended.
Paromita expressed her wish to talk to Surbhi at the conference, however, with the latter having to return to Nagpur, keeping in touch would have been difficult. Just when Surbhi shared her Instagram id with Paromita, marking the beginning of their cute love story. However, for Paromita, it wasn’t love at first sight. “It was just an infatuation.”
“I decided that we would go on a trip to the beach with our friends. I told her the plan and asked if I would propose to her there in front of everyone, would she reject me? She said, ‘No, why would I do that?’ So, I got my answer. So, the proposal that was supposed to happen on a beach in Goa or Mumbai turned into a grand commitment ceremony,” Paromita added.
Asking to the media Paromita stated, “My father knew about my sexual orientation since 2013. When I told my mother recently, she was shocked. But later, she agreed because she wants me to be happy.” Luckily, Surbhi who is a psychiatrist did not face any opposition from her family.
