Kapil Sharma: An Entertainment Legend of India Kapil Sharma is well-known for making people laugh and brightening their day. He was born in Amritsar, Punjab on April 02, 1981. Kapil had a wonderful set of family with father Jeetendra Kumar Punj serving as a head constable in Punjab police and mother Janak Rani being a housewife. Kapil’s family is middle class and he faced financial difficulties. Despite all this, he was commited towards entertainment from a young age. Kapil was very passionate and fond of comedy. In future, he would want to try his hands on it.

Kapil completed his schooling from Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School Amritsar and later onto Hindu College based in Amritsar. Initially, Kapil wanted to be a singer but soon realized his interests relied within stand up and drama performances. In addition to the raw talent he also holds, Kapil achieved top place marks within Punjab.

Transition into the Entertainment Industry

Kapil Sharma’s started off journey was full of struggles and hustle. Comedy is a challenging field and success does not come easy. He faced multiple challenges and rejections along his way and began his journey on reality television shows on Indian comedy “Stand-Up” program, The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (2007) where he successfully bagged the first ever prize of Rupees tenth lakh. All of those competitions awarded winners every week and it established my success in comedy.

Kapil rose to prominence after winning The Great Indian Laughter Challenge which made him a name in every household of India. He went on to participate in and subsequently won several seasons of Comedy Circus on Sony TV, where he demonstrated his unrivaled skill.

Comedy Nights with Kapil (2013–2016)

Kapil debuted his own show on Colors TV named Comedy Nights with Kapil in 2013 and achieved great success using his own brand K9 Productions. The show received a great reception from his fans to the point that it became a movement for stand-up comedy in India. Bollywood stars and celebrities from other industries started coming on the show for promotional activities which ultimately helped the show become one of the most watched television shows in India.

Unfortunately, in 2016 the show was stopped due to conflicts with the channel.

The Kapil Sharma Show (2016–Present)

He started a new show titled The Kapil Sharma Show in 2016 on Sony TV after shutting down Comedy Nights with Kapil. Like its predecessor, it had cameo appearances of celebrities with funny sketches done by supporting actors. The viewers did not disappoint and enjoyed the show, leading to it winning multiple awards for the best television shows in the country and running several seasons.

His comic team, including actors like Sunil Grover, Kiku Sharda, Bharti Singh, Krushna Abhishek, and Chandan Prabhakar, contributed significantly to the show’s success.

Film Career

Kapil Sharma began acting in movies with Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon which was a commercial success. His followup movie, Firangi, did not do as well. He also directed on Netflix in the stand-up special I’m Not Done Yet, where he humorous illustrated his personal journey and story.

 Challenges and Controversies

Like many, Kapil had his share of struggles in life, and some included:

Health Issues and Alcoholism: In 2017, he stepped back from his television commitments due to mental strains coupled with health concerns. In time, he revealed that alcohol had profoundly impacted his life, worsening his other underlying issues.

Sunil Grover Controversy: A fight he had with fellow comedian, Sunil Grover, was perhaps the most dramatized. During the flight together in 2017, heated belongs were exchanged leading Sunil to leave The Kapil Sharma Show.

Legal Problems: A feud stemmed with Colors TV, resulting in a legal battle. In parallel, he had scrimmages with the BMC regarding unsanctioned building work.

Comeback and Digital Ventures

He made his strong return to the Tellie world through The Kapil Sharma Show, and then broke into the OTT platform through Netflix. His special, I am Not Done Yet, had a large audience as it followed a unique narrative structure while told personally, showcasing his achievements and struggles.

Kapil Sharma has quite the impressive resume! He was honored as the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in 2013 in the Entertainment Category. He’s also made multiple appearances on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list and has snagged Best Comedy Show awards for his hit series, The Kapil Sharma Show. In 2018, he received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award for being the Best Comedy Show Host.

On the personal front, Kapil Sharma is happily married to Ginni Chatrath, a love he found back in their college days. They tied the knot in December 2018 and are proud parents to two adorable kids: a daughter named Anayra Sharma and a son, Trishaan Sharma.
