The Tesla Roadster has finally taken center stage again. After years of delays, prototypes, and sky-high promises, Tesla unveiled its second-generation electric sports car in spectacular fashion on October 15, 2026. What arrived is not the car first teased in 2017. It is something far more extreme, a rear-wheel-drive machine that can drive upside down, leap over other vehicles, and, in its most radical form, perform aerial maneuvers with cold-gas thrusters developed alongside SpaceX.
This is the story of the Tesla Roadster: its pioneering past, its turbulent development, and the radical vehicle Tesla now plans to put into production in 2028.
The original Tesla Roadster (2008–2012) was the car that launched Tesla. Built on a Lotus Elise chassis and powered by a lithium-ion battery pack, it proved that an electric vehicle could deliver genuine sports-car performance while covering meaningful range. Production was limited and challenging, but the first Roadster established Tesla’s credibility and laid the foundation for the Model S and everything that followed.
Tesla Roadster : The Long-Awaited Electric Supercar That Flies, Flips, and Redefines Performance
In November 2017, Tesla surprised the world by rolling a sleek red prototype of the next-generation Roadster out of the back of a Semi truck. The claims were extraordinary: 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds, over 250 mph top speed, 620 miles of range, and seating for four. A base price of $200,000 (and $250,000 for the limited Founders Series) drew thousands of reservations with $50,000 deposits. Delivery was promised for 2020.
Those dates slipped repeatedly. Production targets moved from 2020 to 2022, 2023, and beyond as Tesla prioritized volume vehicles and battled supply-chain issues. By 2026 the original concept had evolved dramatically. The production Roadster is now a pure two-seater (or single-seater in its most extreme version), with roughly half the originally promised range, but with performance capabilities that go far beyond what anyone expected in 2017.
The 2026 Reveal: Performance, Thrusters, and Flight
Tesla staged the reveal at SpaceX’s McGregor, Texas test facility. The demonstration mixed high-powered ground-effect fans with cold-gas thrusters. The prototype drove upside down on a specially built ramp using suction, then used thrusters to launch into the air, flip, and land. In another sequence it leapt over a lineup of Tesla vehicles including a Semi. A measured 0-60 mph run with thrusters engaged clocked 0.81 seconds.
Tesla now offers the Roadster in three main versions (with some reports mentioning a base variant):
Performance (“road ready”): Two seats, active aerodynamics, and a multi-mode suction/fan system that generates significant downforce. Claimed 0–60 mph under 1.6 seconds. This is the version available for standard reservation.
Thrust (“race ready”): Adds rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters for even stronger acceleration. Claimed 0–60 mph under 0.9 seconds. Limited release.
Rocket (“air ready”): Single seat, additional thrusters around the vehicle for lift, rotation, and limited flight capability. Claimed 0–60 mph under 0.59 seconds and top speed over 230 mph. Invite-only and not approved for public roads in all regions.

All versions are rear-wheel drive only, using two motors on the rear axle for torque vectoring. Power outputs are substantial – around 1 MW (roughly 1,340 hp) on higher trims, with torque figures exceeding 1,000 lb-ft on the more powerful variants. The lightest version is expected to weigh approximately 3,700 pounds (about 1,700 kg).
Range is quoted at more than 300 miles (real-world estimates around 310–320 miles), a significant reduction from the original 620-mile claim. The battery is designed for rapid charging up to 500 kW input, allowing a 15–85% charge in about 10 minutes on a V4 Supercharger. Architecture sits in the 800–1,000-volt range.
Top speed is stated as over 230 mph, with Elon Musk expressing a longer-term ambition of approaching half the speed of sound (around 383 mph). Materials emphasize lightness: carbon fiber, titanium, and magnesium appear in the construction.
Reservations, Pricing, and Production Timeline
Reservations reopened immediately after the event. The Performance version requires a 50,000deposit(5,000 initially, with the balance due within 10 days; Tesla describes the initial portion as fully refundable). The Thrust version carries a $250,000 reservation requirement. No final retail prices have been announced. Production is targeted for 2028 at Giga Texas, according to Musk “actually, for real.”
The Roadster is positioned as a halo product rather than a volume seller. Musk has acknowledged it may not move the financial needle dramatically for Tesla, but it serves as a technological showcase and a statement of engineering ambition.

Ground-effect suction fans that can produce strong downforce, enabling the upside-down driving demonstration and improving track performance.
Cold-gas thrusters (pressurized nitrogen) for acceleration boost and, on the Rocket, limited flight and attitude control.
Steer-by-wire and advanced active aerodynamics.
An emphasis on driver engagement Musk has described it as potentially the last purely human-driven high-performance car Tesla will make as the company shifts further toward autonomy and robotics.
These systems raise practical questions about street legality, regulation, tire loads at extreme speeds, and how the thruster gas will be refilled in everyday use. Tesla has indicated the Rocket version will not be road-legal everywhere, and even the more conventional trims push the boundaries of what current regulations allow.
The second-generation Tesla Roadster is no longer the long-range grand tourer first imagined in 2017. It has become a pure performance statement an electric supercar that borrows technology from rockets and aims to shatter conventional limits of acceleration, grip, and even ground contact.
Whether the production version arrives on schedule in 2028 and delivers on the most extreme claims remains to be proven. What is already clear is that Tesla has chosen spectacle and engineering ambition over the more conservative path many expected after nearly a decade of waiting.
For enthusiasts who reserved a spot years ago or those placing new deposits now, the wait continues. But the car that emerged from that Texas night in October 2026 is one of the most radical vehicles ever shown by a major automaker. The Tesla Roadster is no longer just an electric sports car. In its most extreme form, it is something closer to a land-and-air machine that rewrites the rules of what a production vehicle can do.
