Competing at Scotstoun Stadium on 27 July 2026, Sharmila Dhankar delivered a composed and determined performance. She opened with a solid 9.48 m throw, improved to 9.58 m in the second round, and then unleashed her best effort of 9.81 m in the third attempt to secure the gold medal.

From Adversity to Glory: The Inspiring Journey of Sharmila Dhankar
What makes Sharmila’s achievement truly special is her remarkable personal journey. The 40-year-old Haryana athlete only took up para-athletics six years ago at the age of 34, after overcoming polio and escaping an abusive marriage. Starting late in the sport, she quickly rose through the ranks with sheer determination and hard work.
At the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Sharmila Dhankar finished a heartbreaking fourth. Four years later, she returned stronger, more experienced, and ready to rewrite history. Recent form, including gold in the F57 shot put at the 2026 Fazza International Para Athletics Championships in Dubai, had already signalled her readiness for a big performance in Glasgow.
Why Sharmila Dhankar’s Gold Matters for Indian Para-Sports
Sharmila’s gold is more than just a medal — it is a breakthrough for Indian Para Athletics on the Commonwealth stage. India had not won a Para Athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games since 2006. Her success as the first Indian woman to win a Para Athletics medal at the Games, and the first overall gold in the discipline, will inspire a new generation of para-athletes across the country.
The win also boosted India’s medal tally significantly on Day 4 of the Glasgow 2026 Games and highlighted the growing strength of India’s para-sports contingent.
What’s Next for Sharmila Dhankar?
Sharmila has already set her sights higher. After dedicating her Commonwealth Games gold to her mother, she has spoken about aiming for success at the Asian Games and the Paralympic Games in the future. With continued support and her proven ability to perform under pressure, the best years of Sharmila Dhankar’s career may still lie ahead.
