Indian Hydrogen Train : In a major step toward green and sustainable transportation, Indian Railways has approved the launch of India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. The project marks a significant milestone in the country’s push for eco-friendly railway technology.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the hydrogen fuel cell-based train is expected to begin operations soon under the Northern Railway zone.
India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train
The newly approved train will feature a 10-coach DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) configuration powered by a 1200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. The train will operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph on the dedicated Jind-Sonipat section.
This initiative places India among a select group of countries, including Germany, Japan, China, and the United States, that are actively exploring hydrogen-powered rail transportation.
How Indian Hydrogen Train Technology Works
Hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction using hydrogen. Unlike diesel engines, the process produces only water vapor as emission, making it a clean and environmentally friendly alternative for railway transportation.
The train uses Distributed Power Rolling Stock (DPRS) technology, where power systems are distributed across the coaches instead of relying on a separate locomotive. This improves energy efficiency and operational performance.
Why the Jind-Sonipat Route Was Selected
The Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana has been chosen as the pilot corridor for the hydrogen train project. Indian Railways has also established an indigenous hydrogen storage and refueling facility at Jind to support operations.
Officials confirmed that the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has already approved hydrogen storage and dispensing operations at the site. Advanced safety systems, including hydrogen leak detectors and flame monitoring sensors, have also been installed for secure operations.
A Big Boost for Green Transportation
The hydrogen train project is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support India’s clean energy goals. The move is expected to help lower carbon emissions while promoting sustainable public transportation across the country.
Railway experts believe this project could open the door for more hydrogen-powered trains in the future if the pilot operations are successful.
